Piedmont Beautification Foundation
PBF: On May 5, PBF presented the City of Piedmont with a check for $120,000.00 to fulfill our pledge to pay one half of the original estimate for the cost of completing Phase III of the Exedra Plaza Project. There was a Groundbreaking ceremony for the Piedmont Steps and Overlook Project in honor of Barbara Magee on May 7. Many of the Centennial Tree and Bench donors as well as Jed Magee and his son attended the Groundbreaking. They were joined by members of the Park Commission, the Mayor and other city dignitaries.
PBF is still receiving donations in response to our Spring Newsletter and although the donations are arriving a bit more slowly than last year, we are hopeful that the community will continue to donate generously despite the economy. There are many new projects in the city that will need financial help from the Beautification Foundation.
Our last meeting of the year will be held at 4:00 p.m. on June 10, at Diane Coleman’s home.

One of the world’s premier public gardens, NYBG is dedicated to environmental education and conservation of plant diversity. Reservations are accepted on a first come, first served basis, with a maximum of 150 attendees. Preference will be given to club horticulture chairmen, first time attendees and to clubs who have never sent a delegate.
THE DEADLINE FOR RESERVATIONS IS JUNE 18, 2008.

President’s May Message:
It seems to me that Piedmont Garden Club members are very visible at the Zone and GCA level these days!
In the April/May BULLETIN, our own Derry MacBride, the GCA National Affairs and Legislation Chairman, is pictured prominently in a four page story about the recent trip to Washington by the NAL Committee. She will share her adventures with us at our May Annual Meeting. Ann Lyman is also on that committee as the V.P. for Forests/Redwoods.
June Brugger has served with distinction as our Zone XII Program Chairman and next year will join the GCA Finance Committee. And the latest news….Betsy Wagener will be the Vice President for Zone XII!
All these ladies are following a PGC tradition of service beyond the Club level, strengthening our zone and national programs with their expertise.
Jackie Davis, June Brugger, Sue Herrick, Fran Wolfe and I had the opportunity, thanks to you, of attending the Zone XII Meeting in Pasadena, hosted by the Diggers G.C., this past April. Fran Wolfe was presented with the highest Zone Award, the Creative Leadership Award. How appropriate. It was an amazing experience and one that I will share with you at our Annual Meeting on May 21.
By the way, if you click on The Real Dirt after entering the GCA website (gcamerica.org), you will be presented with a stunning photograph of a Monarch butterfly visiting an apricot rose that seems to match the butterfly perfectly – and shot by our own Margy Pengilly.
Sadly, for the second month in a row I am sending condolences. Bug Peterson passed away last week after a brave struggle marked by her usual up-beat approach to the world. Our best wishes go to her family, including Philly Carmichael, Bug’s loving sister.
It has been a joy and a privilege to be your President for these past two years; the experience has gone much too quickly. I hope that Jackie enjoys her time as much as I have; I know that with her energy, intelligence, and creativity, we are going to have a wonderful time with her at the helm.

Under inflated tires lead to about 1.2 billion gallons of wasted gas every year and hundreds of injuries and deaths that could have been prevented, according to
a U.S. government report. Simply check your tire pressure at least once a month when tires are cool, experts say, and inflate them to the pressure recommended by the vehicle’s manufacturer. In most vehicles, this can be found on the driver’s side door jam.

Conservation Tip:
Improve energy efficiency in your own backyard.
Replace regular light bulbs with compact florescent bulbs.
If every American household replaced just one regular incandescent light bulb, either outside or in, with an Energy Star rated compact florescent bulb, it would prevent more than 11.5 billion pounds of CO2 emissions- enough pollution equivalent to removing nearly a million cars from the road.
Install outdoor automatic light timers.
Installing a timer can cut lighting energy use by up to half.
Purchase solar-powered garden products.
Solar-powered lights and fountains are available that recharge each day and don’t require installation of extensive wiring throughout garden beds.

President’s October Message
Those of us fortunate enough to attend the best garden party in California (SFBG Society’s Garden Feast on September 26), had a chance to admire the results of the Millennium Gift from all five bay area GCA garden clubs along with a very special new pavilion. For the year 2000, our clubs made a donation toward the building of the Helen Crocker Russell library terrace using the famous 12th century monastery stones that had been languishing for 60 years behind the old de Young Museum. They had been donated to the City by William Randolph Hearst after a fire damaged their crates, thus erasing important information about how they were supposed to be reassembled!
When you next find yourself in the Garden, be sure to see the renovation of the Rhododendron Garden; a new stone pavilion built from more of these stones by master stonemason and acclaimed sculptor Edwin Hamilton centers the design. It is stunning in its artistry and evocation of an ancient period. In the center of the pavilion is a kind of key stone, a centerpiece stone which was used more than 800 years ago to create a dome-like roof system, also called a stone vault. Hamilton built an I-beam structure that mimics the lines of the vault so the layout looks like it once did.
Admiring the stonework, I felt so proud of the role of our garden club and our sister bay area clubs. We may be in Piedmont, but our good works extend to the world beyond our city limits. In November, the Conservation Committee and Horticulture Committee will be deciding on how to distribute their fund to those wonderful organizations that seek to preserve the environment and encourage an appreciation and love of gardens.
Many thanks to Mary Ann Parachini and Fran Wolfe for reminding me about the Millennium Gift. Where would we be without tribal memory? And thanks also to the Richmond Review for the technical information about the new pavilion.

Welcome Back From Valerie Matzger
Summer? What summer? For those of us who are not quite ready to plunge back in, it will be some consolation to know that our Program Committee (Deb Van Nest, Chair, Pam Dickson, Nancy Girard, Jan Zovickian and Mary Lou Righellis) spent part of their summer putting together a fabulous year for all of us. And there will be hort trips and workshops and a wonderful trip to Redwood National Park by the Conservation Committee, to name just a few events.
And our Greenbook will be ready due to the hard work of Michelle Winchester, our Corresponding Secretary. Be sure to check out the Master Calendar section and mark your calendars for a good gardening year.
A warm welcome to our new Provisional members: Anne Zerbst, Karen Sullivan, Roxanne Gault, Linda Lei, Gayle Lambert, Patty Siskind and Nancy Jacobs. Our Provisionals chairs (Betsy Wagener, Fran Wolfe and Mary Ann Parachini) have also been at work this summer developing activities to help these ladies feel right at home in our Club.
And a salute to our new Active members: Lisa Cole, Ann Marie Frasco, Mary Heafey, Nancy Peterson, Peggy Stock, Marilyn Weber, and Jan Zovickian. You will notice that some of them are already serving on the Board and as Special Committee Chairmen. They are a wonderful, cohesive group, thanks to them and to their Provisionals “mom”, Margo Anderson.
Some of us were lucky enough to purchase, at the boutique, a wildflower walk at Tahoe with Ann Reynolds. It was three days of heaven as we hiked up Blackwood Canyon to the loveliest of wildflower gardens that Ann had sleuthed out for us. And that famous Reynolds hospitality was memorable as well!
I cannot fail to mention that we have lost some wonderful ladies over the summer. Long term members will remember Mary Ann Green as a remarkably talented and generous lady. I don’t know how we’ll do without the electric smile and warmth of Cissie O’Brien, and how do I begin to convey to our newest members the crucial importance to our Club of our amazing Anne Sutton? We are blessed to have known them and I, for one, can thank Piedmont Garden Club for that opportunity.
I look forward to the coming year, your friendship, and your participation in the many programs planned for you.
Cheers, Valerie
